Nuance of the day: the difference between the German verbs “bestreiten” and “abstreiten”. The former is neutral; the latter implies that the person is lying – quite an important difference in a newspaper article! But these two verbs are as often mixed up these days as the adjective “scheinbar” (= appears to be but isn’t) and the adverb “anscheinend” (= appears to be and most likely is).
“Scheinbar”, in addition, is often wrongly used as an adverb.
