The Mandala Symbol
“mandala n.
Any of various ritualistic geometric designs symbolic of the universe, used in Hinduism and Buddhism as an aid to meditation.
[Sanskrit mawQalam, circle, perhaps from Tamil muëalai, ball]”
American Heritage Dictionary
This symbol appeared in two of my projects that are not publicly accessible anymore. I see a number of things in it that the American Heritage Dictionary fails to mention:
1.
First of all it symbolizes the colorfulness of life and opinions as opposed to the dreary drabness of ideologies and religious beliefs. It’s a metaphor for wildness, multitude and
plurality as opposed to law and order, rules and regulations, stifled creativity and curbed individuality.
2.
Its predominant center stands for things like focus, fecundity, ambition, obsession, passion, perseverance.
3.
The repetitive roundness of its design and ornaments, along with the above, evokes associations such as planet, ball, vagina, penetration, perpetuity, cosmos, circularity.
